Almost 150 years ago, this building already housed a bank, and the son of the porter later became an intellectual, a Franciscan, a university chaplain, a resistance fighter, and ultimately a victim of Nazi terror.
Father Johannes Kapistran Pieller OFM
Born: September 30, 1891, in Vienna
Died: April 15, 1945, Stein an der Donau
hoffnungszeuge - Witness of Hope
Father Johannes Kapistran Pieller was a Catholic priest, Franciscan, and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime. Growing up in humble circumstances at Strauchgasse 1, near Freyung, he joined the Franciscan monastery in 1909 and was ordained a priest in 1918. In addition to his pastoral work, he earned three doctoral degrees in theology, political science, and law and was actively involved as a student chaplain.
During World War II, he supported the Austrian Anti-Fascist Freedom Movement by writing leaflets and providing financial assistance. Arrested by the Gestapo in 1943, he was sentenced to death in 1944 and executed in April 1945 during a massacre at Stein prison.
A quote from his farewell letter reveals his deep conviction:
"Let no one hold anything against me if things were not as they should have been. I wish to depart from here in peace."
Pastors like Father Kapistran!
Perhaps you know someone who is going through a difficult time or has drifted away from God. Ask God to encounter this person and help them find their way.
Light a candle in a church along the way to the cathedral and talk to God about it. Be courageous and trust that your prayer can make a difference.
